Tirta Empul Temple for Ritual Purification

Tirta Empul is one of the most famous and most sacred temples in Bali at the same time. You’ll find this magnificent temple complex 14 kilometres north-east of Ubud, in close proximity to Gunung Kawi Temple. The complex consists of three main areas; the front, the outer and the inner courtyard. Take a leisurely stroll through the gardens and enjoy the statues and tropical plants before heading to the gate from where you will see the first pools.

Literally translated Tirta Empul means “holy water spring” and it refers to a water source located within the temple. The water of this spring leads to multiple purification pools, most of them filled with koi fish. The best-known pool of Tirta Empul is the large rectangular pool comprising twelve fountains which pour the holy spring water over worshippers standing in the pool. People from all over the island often visit this holy temple to pray and to cleanse themselves in one of the pools, especially on holidays, such as Galungan Day, and in weekends, so be aware that it can get really crowded on such days.

Like at any other temple in Bali, it’s expected that you dress properly and behave respectfully.
