After having to pause this event in 2021 due to the pandemic, the team at Bali Island School were super excited to host this year’s Careers Day. The Careers Day at Bali Island School is one of many initiatives offered at the school to students, as a way of preparing them for their futures past high school.

I started my career in the classroom as a teacher many years ago, what a treat it was to get back to the classroom again recently as a guest speaker for Bali Island School’s Careers Day. This time instead of teaching the curriculum, I was there to share my insights with the Grade 6-12 students on what a career in Communication & Journalism looks like in 2022.
After having to pause this event in 2021 due to the pandemic, the team at Bali Island School were super excited to host this year’s Careers Day. The Careers Day at Bali Island School is one of many initiatives offered at the school to students, as a way of preparing them for their futures past high school. The event was kicked off with a keynote speech from Rich Robinson who spoke to the students about what technology breakthroughs mean for new jobs and careers, and what the world might look like in twenty years (cue the Metaverse!).
Guest speakers included Melati Wijsen – Founder of Bye Bye Plastic Bags & YOUTHOPIA, Rina Mariani – General Manger of Andaz Bali, Adam Sundqvist = Senior Creative Producer at Spotify to name a few. There was a total of 20 professionals from a range of fields invited to talk on 2 x 45-minute panels. The students could choose two panels to attend over two different sessions. Careers that were covered in the panels included Hospitality/Tourism Industry, Sustainability/Environmental, Information Technology, Arts & Design, Communications/ Journalism, Economics/Business, Medical and Laws/Diplomacy.
There was a constant message that stuck out amongst all speakers during the sessions, and that was that while grades and career are important, personal character development and the ability to adapt are equally as important especially in modern day careers and todays fast paced and ever changing world!
For me personally, I always find it invigorating to be surrounds by young and eager minds again. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing my insights in the career of journalism and communications with the students. They were inquisitive, polite and insightful….and stay tuned, as a result of Careers Day, one of the students is eager to complete an internships at Bali Buddies. You’ll be hearing more from her soon!
