Tanah Lot’s shrine, perched on top of a rock in the ocean, is the most visited and photographed temple in Bali, especially at sunset, when crowds and traffic are at their peak. Tanah lot is one of the most important and venerated sea temples, and is closely associated with the Majapahit priest Nirartha, who travelled to Bali to spread Hinduism. He established a site, to honour Baruna, the sea god, and from there he taught local villagers about his religion. The village chief was against this and he gathered his troops to dispel Nirartha. The priest resisted and moved a rock into the sea, while transforming his sashes into sea snakes to guard the rock at its base. While visiting Tanah Lot you can dine on the clifftop at one of the restaurants overlooking the temple. If you visit during high tide, the temple is marooned at sea. During low tide you can walk over to the temple, but note that non-Balinese people are not allowed to enter the temple. The panoramic views though, whether it’s during the day or during sunset, are highlights not to be missed.
