Ornate wooden wall panels, rattan light fixtures, and tropical blooms greet you as you step into the lobby of Andaz Bali. It’s effortlessly grand while remaining light and airy — a fitting introduction for what’s to come.

One of Sanur’s newest luxury stays, Andaz Bali occupies a prime beachfront spot, with rolling lawns and landscaped gardens leading straight to the sand. The hotel’s design is modelled on a traditional Balinese village with alang alang (thatched) roofs and a central grassy courtyard for gatherings.
Bali Buddies recently checked in for a stay in one of their ocean-view rooms. And while we certainly lapped up the luxury and five-star service, what we really appreciated about this property was its old-Bali charm.
Whether you choose to rest up in a room, suite, or villa, all accommodations are spacious and visually appealing. Local woods feature heavily in the decor, with pretty accents of patterned batik fabrics. Our room had an elevated terrace overlooking the garden and sea. The chic bathroom was another highlight, complete with his-and-her vanity areas and a free-standing bathtub.

Perhaps more sought after, the lagoon-access suites have the added appeal of being able to fall out of bed and glide straight into the water. But if you really want to feel like royalty, your only choice should be the two-bedroom oceanfront villa. Bigger than a professional basketball court, the space is fit for the Hollywood elite. Immaculately styled living quarters sprawl out onto an al fresco lounge area and sundeck. Flamboyan trees shade your own private pool, and all is enclosed with a charming stone-hewn wall.

Dining at ANDAZ Bali is an equally memorable experience. In fact, we would wager that they lay on one of the best breakfasts in Bali!
Freshly baked pastries, cold cuts, cheeses, house-made granola, and jamu (local health drinks) are just a few of the treats. Add a free-flow mimosa package for instant decadence. And remember, even if you’re not staying, you’re still welcome to enjoy their stellar breakfast spread as an outside guest.
We loved eating our meals picnic-style in the village square (the central lawn). Order from any of the restaurants and dine amidst the green, or enjoy complimentary coffee and cold drinks from the guest lounge here.
Come evening, Fire Fox, the resort’s Asian steakhouse is great fun. Book in for Teppanyaki-grilled steaks, local meats cooked over charcoal, and a healthy serving of kitchen theatre. Open all day, Wok Wok is the place to go for spice-laden Indonesian cuisine. But the pick of the bunch (for us, at least) is Fisherman’s Club on the beach. Because what could be better than dining on coconut-husk-grilled seafood just metres away from the ocean it was caught in?
The bar serves up a full wine list plus expertly made cocktails, like their rum-spiked Andaz Colada. Head down for Happy Hour (3pm – 6pm) for a cut-price sundowner. They also do a limitless brunch every Sunday (12noon until 5pm) which is a great chance to sample morsels of everything — with free-flow wines, beers, and cocktails.

We were also taken by the resort’s super funky kids’ club. Built like a traditional Balinese house with an outdoor kitchen and all, there’s a nap room, playstations, and even a theatre inside. Imagination-sparking activities include kite-making, treasure hunts, and Balinese dance lessons. Even better, you don’t have to be staying at ANDAZ to use it. Another compelling reason to treat yourself to that long – and uninterrupted — ANDAZ brunch spread!

As you’d expect of a hotel of this caliber, the site includes a huge gym and spa. You can zen out with a signature massage or rise early for the morning sunrise yoga. One of our favourite activities was cycling along Sanur’s famous beach path on one of the resort’s bicycles.
If lounging by the pool is your thing, there are three to choose from. Alit is the tropical kids’ pool, Santhi is a secluded pool nestled deep within the resort, and Liang is the liveliest of the lot — a 40-metre pool overlooking the beach. And thanks to ANDAZ’s day pass offering, outside guests can enjoy them, too.
