Meduwe Karang Temple and the Dutch Artist

Located in the north of Bali, the Meduwe Karang Temple can be reached within half an hour drive from Singaraja. History has it that the temple was dedicated to Dewi Sri, the god of the rice. Literally translated Meduwe Karang means “owner of the land”. Locals often gather in this temple to pray for a successful harvest of their crops. Inside the temple are multiple shrines dedicated to the god of the sun, Surya, and to Mother Earth, Ibu Pertiwi, all in relation to the concept of protecting fertility of the farmers’ land.

The main temple path leads you past 34 stone figures from the Ramayana, all the way to a large and peaceful courtyard, which is used for gatherings during religious festivals. On the main shrine, you can find a very interesting bass relief of a famous Dutch artist, Nieuwenkamp. This man was considered to be the first European to visit the island back in 1906. He spent a lot of time in north Bali, riding around on his bicycle, studying local arts and culture. This inspired locals and thus he and his bike were carved out in the sandstone walls.
