Marriott Business Council Indonesia has shown that they remain dedicated to making sustainable changes on the island, guided by the company’s 2025 Sustainability and Social Impact Goals and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

On the 15th March 2024, Marriott International, Bali NextGen Business Council, Sungai Watch representatives and local community members came together for a clean-up activity in the Baturiti Area of Tabanan, Bali.

The aim of the clean-up was to draw attention to the importance of preserving Bali‘s natural beauty, whilst also combating plastic pollution at one of the island’s most contaminated forests, which is threatening nearby Lake Beratan. With over 110 participants involved in the initiative, around 8 tons of plastic waste were successfully removed from the area.

This Big Clean-Up project is just one of the many initiatives stemming from the long-standing partnership between Marriott Business Council Bali and Sungai Watch. Since the collaboration began, Marriott International has sponsored the first Sungai Watch Waste Sorting Facility in Singaraja and the installation of 15 river barriers in North Bali’s most polluted rivers on the 15th May 2023.

Since the program launched and throughout 2023, Marriott International has organised 54 river clean-ups in total, removing nearly 26.5 tons of plastic waste from the rivers, before it reaches the ocean.

Seeing the positive impact of the Waste Sorting Facility in the Singaraja community, Marriott Business Council Indonesia also announced its decision to continue supporting the facility’s operation for another year.

Furthermore, Marriott Business Council Indonesia intends to support the installation of the second Sungai Watch Facility in Q4 2024 in Bekasi, West Java. Funding will come from Marriott International’s major annual fundraising efforts: Marriott Charity Golf Indonesia in June and July 2024 and Road to Give Indonesia 2024.
