Discovering Karma Kandara Resort – Bali’s Luxurious Cliffside Escape

No doubt you’ve seen the stunning images of this luxe Bali resort, perched above the majestic Uluwatu coastline. Karma Kandara’s spectacular infinity pool and award-winning clifftop spa are renowned throughout the island for their sweeping Indian Ocean views, and one of the many reasons why we couldn’t wait to visit for ourselves!

We were here to find out more about Karma Kandara’s newest accommodation addition, the Mentari Residences. This collection of 33 meticulously crafted apartments promises guests the perfect blend of modern comfort and serene island living. With such breathtaking surroundings, we were definitely excited for our stay at this exclusive Uluwatu haven!

The Mentari Residences are contemporary open-plan apartments with garden views and all the modern amenities you’ll need during your stay. You can choose from Studio Apartments, as well as 1 or 2-bedrooms. We loved the feel of our 1-bedroom apartment which had its own private balcony and fully equipped kitchenette. It felt like a home away from home! After unpacking, we dialled for a buggy to take us to the lobby as we were keen to check-out the exclusive Karma Beach and dip our toes in the ocean water.

The hill tram at Karma Kandara is currently undergoing an upgrade, which they are aiming to have up-and-running ready for the July holiday season. However, there’s no need to despair, as you can still easily access the stunning Karma Beach with the resort’s regular shuttle bus service which takes you straight to Melasti Beach. From there, it’s a short amble along a paved walkway which takes you straight to the powdery white sands and aquamarine waters that Karma Beach is famous for.

As we arrived, we were met by a live DJ who was pumping-out some mellow beats, creating a relaxing, chilled-out vibe. Although Karma Beach is private, the beach club is open to the public as guests of Karma Resort. They have regular special events taking place each week, such as movie nights every Tuesday and Thursday, Girl’s Day Out every Friday, fire dancing on Saturdays, and Sunday sessions with Sammy Sax.

It has a real family-friendly atmosphere with plenty of comfy sunbeds, spacious cabanas, water-sports and oceanside spa treatments to keep you busy. Le Club 22 is Karma Beach’s newest beachfront bar and dining area, serving-up Mediterranean-style cuisine and tapas dishes for you to savour against their gorgeous ocean-side setting. We treated ourselves to a couple of delicious cocktails, not wanting to spoil our appetite for the dining experience we were going to be trying later on. The evening was beckoning, so we made our way back to the main resort with great anticipation (and rumbling stomachs) for Karma Kandara’s Paella Night at the stunning Temple Lounge.

Set on the rooftop of Di Mare restaurant, Temple Lounge offers dramatic panoramas of the Uluwatu coastline and was the perfect setting for our eagerly awaited Paella Night. As the sun set, we were treated to gorgeous pinky-blue hues as we dined al-fresco. Simmering before our eyes, in the biggest cooking pans we had ever seen, were two family-style paellas – one chicken and the other seafood. Giving-off a mouth-watering aroma, it would have been rude not to try both, along with the free-flow red sangria! We were soon joined by two flamenco dancers, hypnotising us with their flowing skirts and dramatic foot stomping. After a bit of encouragement (and perhaps a few too many sangrias!) we were keen to join them to have a go ourselves. It was a great evening, with plenty of food and smiles all round.

For those who want to carry-on the night’s entertainment, tucked-away on the ground floor of the Mentari Residences you’ll find Schooners Sports Bar. This discrete sports bar doesn’t just boast a karaoke system and comfy nooks to sit in, they also serve-up some delicious cocktails – providing all you need for a fun evening! We made good use of the microphones, belting out a few classic sing-along tunes, whilst sampling some of their signature and classic cocktails. You’ll be pleased to know that should you feel peckish, Schooners Sports Bar also has a snack menu, featuring plenty of tasty faves, such as classic scotch eggs, nachos, New York-style hotdogs and Aussie pies – there’s even free pizza on karaoke night!

We absolutely loved the snug pub-vibe at Schooners Sports Bar and the personalised service they provide. Even though the official opening times are 5pm to 11pm, they will stay open until the last person has left. Not only that, they can also arrange for the bar to be opened at any time of day if you have a special request – talk about top-notch customer service! As we knew we had an active start the following morning, we wrapped-up the singing and made our way to our rooms for a restful night’s sleep.

Boxing ring at Karma Kandara Resort

Feeling refreshed after a comfortable night, we were keen to work up a sweat before breakfast, so we had signed-up to Karma’s complementary Muay Thai training located on the top floor of the Mentari Residences. We were totally out of our comfort zone, as this wasn’t anything we had ever tried before – but us Bali Buddies girls are always up for a challenge! Led by our expert trainer Rico, we started off with some warm-up drills before getting kitted-up and moving onto punching those pads. Not only is Muay Thai the art of Thai boxing, it’s a great way to get the pulse racing and focus the mind. Rico was an excellent coach, very attentive and made sure that we could all get involved, no matter what our fitness level. We were certainly very thankful for the cold towels that were provided at the end, and after all that hard work, we were definitely ready for a well-deserved breakfast!

Di Mare Restaurant by Karma Kandara

Once we’d freshened-up, we made our way to breakfast where we were rewarded for all our efforts this morning with the most stunning panoramic views over the Indian Ocean. The azure blues of the ocean and the skyline, set against the dramatic white cliffs was a captivating backdrop as we took advantage of the scrumptious Di Mare Signature Breakfast. Enjoying the gentle sea breeze, we tucked into fresh artisanal breads, a selection of tropical fruits, a speciality breakfast dish of our choice, freshly squeezed fruit juice and tea or coffee. There are also à-la-carte options available if you’d prefer. Our French-folded omelette filled with spinach and goats cheese was the perfect pick-me-up we needed after our busy morning.

After a leisurely breakfast, we headed back to the apartments at Mentari Residences to reluctantly pack-up our belongings. Even though we only stayed for one night, we had been made to feel so welcome that we already felt like we were saying goodbye to an old friend. As Karma’s wonderfully attentive staff assisted us with our bags and organised a buggy to the lobby, we already knew that it would not be long before we returned to this enchanting resort. See you soon Karma Kandara!
