Best Things to do in Tabanan

Where is Tabanan, Bali exactly? This place is creeping more and more into our Bali vocabulary these days with tourism sprawling further and further up the north coast beyond Canggu. Just a few beaches north of Echo Beach is where Tabanan Regency starts, stretching inland to the picturesque hills and rice field landscapes of the Jatiluwih and Bedugul areas, as well as covering the black sandy coastline of Balian Beach and beyond.

There are plenty of interesting things to do in Tabanan, as well as accommodation options to suit every style and budget. The Tabanan area makes for a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of south Bali. With less crowds and beautiful landscapes, it’s a popular spot for yoga retreats and people who are looking to ‘get away from it all’.  It’s easy to take a day trip to visit Tabanan’s attractions from Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud with a driver. Check out our recommendation on the best things to do in Tabanan.

Looking for a driver to help you explore the Tabanan area? Using this Klook voucher, you can book a driver for 6, 10 or 12 hours and even select a preferred language starting at just AUD$42!

Tanah Lot Temple

The Aerial View of Tanah Lot Temple Bali
Tabanan Bali Aerial

One of the most striking and photographed temples in Bali is Tanah Lot Temple. This iconic temple is an ancient Hindu shrine dating back to the 1600’s, which sits on top of a rocky island just off the beach. It is one of Bali’s seven sea temples, and also one of the most visited along with the famous Uluwatu Temple.

We recommend getting there in time for sunset, grabbing some snacks and drinks from the local vendors and watching the sun set over the majestic water temple. There are also snake caves on the beach to explore, as well as markets in the area. The temple is especially interesting when a Hindu ceremony is taking place!

Balian Beach

Balian Beachs

An exotic black sand beach worthy of a postcard, Balian is a small, coastal village in the Tabanan area with rice fields and volcanoes as the backdrop. A river-mouth creates sandbanks, making it a popular spot for surfers looking for an uncrowded beach break. The beachfront Pondok Pitaya Restaurant is a nice day time hangout where you can use the pool, as the beach can at times be a little too wild for swimming. Balian Beach still has a local feel, with just a few cafes and restaurants. You can visit Balian as a day trip from Canggu, or you might choose to stay a few nights to revel in the peace and beauty of Balian Beach.

Jatiluwih Terraces

Former US President Barack Obama brought his family here on their visit to Bali in 2017. Thousands of hectares of emerald green rice fields make up the World Heritage listed Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, with terraces cascading from the slopes of the volcanoes through the valleys of the Tabanan Regency. The peaceful atmosphere, fresh air and impressive agriculture makes the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces an important part of Bali’s cultural landscape. You will also find that the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces are less crowded than the famous Tegallalang Rice Terraces which are found in the Ubud area.

If exploring waterfalls is one of your favourite things to do, make sure you put Blahmantung Waterfall at the top of your to-do list. This tall, jungle-clad waterfall cascades from an impressive height of 95-metres into a small rock pool at the bottom. Reached by a casual 1-kilometre hiking trail, the waterfall is serene and much less visited than many of the other waterfalls on the island. You can spot 3 separate waterfalls when you visit Blahmantung and enjoy stunning jungle scenery all around.

Visit the Buddhist’s worship place, Vihara Dharma Giri

A large white reclining Buddha statue under a clear blue sky, with flowering plants in pots in the foreground, creates a serene atmosphere at Vihara Dharma Giri Tabanan Bali

A Buddhist place of worship, the main attraction at Vihara Dharma Giri is the large sleeping Buddha statue which stretches 10-metres horizontally. The biggest Buddha statue in Bali, you will need to climb quite a few stairs to reach the peacefully sleeping Buddha. Surrounding views of mountains, jungle and agriculture make Vihara Dharma Giri a calm and sacred spot, which is great for sight-seeing and enjoying quiet meditation. Buddhist and Hindu elements come together here making it especially unique. You must wear a sarong to enter the temple, which you can borrow at the entrance.
