One of Bali’s original tourist hubs, Kuta has had a controversial reputation over previous years for its mega night clubs, budget shopping and backpacker-friendly hostels that dominated the Kuta scene in the 80s, 90s and 00s. But Kuta has a lot more going for it these days than cheap drinks and stalls selling Bintang singlets! Check the best things to do in Kuta and Legian.

The airport is just minutes away, the beaches are friendly for swimmers and those learning to surf, as well as amazing shopping centres with international brands and more mellow traffic, making it easier to get around.

Stay at the Hard Rock and make the most of the Waterpark

It’s a well-known fact that Bali’s coldest Bintangs and coconuts are found at the beach bars of Bali, and Kuta Beach is one of our favourite spots to enjoy a sundowner with our toes in the sand. Kuta Beach is lined with friendly local beach bars.

When you grab a drink at one of the warungs, you’ll get ‘bloody cold’ beverages for a good price – and the beachfront views are included for free! You can even grab a tasty and reasonably priced nasi goreng for dinner to enjoy as you watch the sun set.

Let’s start by saying, no one is too old for Waterbom! It’s certainly one of our favourite family-friendly attractions on the island, as everyone from young kids, older kids and even the young at heart will have an absolute blast. Of course, the biggest attractions are the monster slides like the Green Viper, the Pipeline and the Boomerang, but there are some more mellow options too like the Lazy River as well as Lagoon Pool with baby-friendly play area and slide. You’ll also find plenty of spots to chill under a gazebo with a cool drink and tasty nibbles from one of their many food and beverage outlets.

Remember the victims at the Ground Zero Memorial

Tragically, Kuta became a part of Australian history in 2022, when 202 people, including 88 Australians, were killed in the bombing of a famous Kuta nightspot. A monument now stands at the site of the bombing where you can remember the lives of the victims, and others who were affected by the tragedy.

This controversial Kuta tourist attraction has been a staple of Kuta nightlife for many years. You can catch little people in the ring every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at Y Sports Bar on Jalan Padma. Make sure you book on boxing night, as the bar is often at capacity!

Learn to surf on the mellow waves of Kuta Beach

Kuta Beach is one of the best beaches in Bali for beginner surfers thanks to the mellow waves and sandy bottom, unlike the sharp reefs and hollow waves of Uluwatu and the crowded breaks of Canggu.

The swell size is usually perfect for beginner surfers, and the many surf schools and surf guides on the beach can teach you everything you need to know from paddling to pop-up to make sure you catch those precious waves.

When it comes to places to visit near Kuta Beach, Azul Beach Club is one cool spot you don’t want to miss. The first shopping mall in Bali, Bali Mall Galleria has international brands such as Birkenstock, H&M, Uniqlo and Victoria’s Secret. You will find the major homeware stores here too, like Informa and Ace Hardware. Into luxury brands? At DFS Galleria you can do all of your duty-free shopping before heading to the airport. There are plenty of food outlets here as well as a movie theatre. It’s a great place to hang out on a rainy day in Kuta!

Get into the Santorini spirit at Santorini restaurant

This authentic Greek restaurant transports you straight to the island of Santorini with its authentic Greek food, Greek music and Greek island vibes. It’s a family run restaurant that was established in 2011 and is a good value spot for dinner and drinks.

Try you hand at haggling at the street markets

The street markets of Kuta area rite of passage when it comes to picking out souvenirs and handicrafts. The shops go beyond selling just sarongs, phallic bottle openers and Bintang singlets. You can also buy handmade clothes, designer knock-offs, sports merchandise, art, homewares and even electronics. Just remember when haggling that you can usually knock the price down to at least 30% from what they first offer you!

Bali Sea Turtle Society

Want to experience the magic of releasing cute little baby sea turtles into the ocean? Between April and October each year, you can join the Bali Sea Turtle Society on Kuta Beach as they send-off turtles once they have hatched from their protected nests.

Bali Sea Turtle Society is all about educating the public about turtles and turtle conservation. Keep an eye out on their Facebook page for info on turtle release dates.

Legian Food Court

Not just great for dining on a budget, Legian Food Court is famous for food stalls selling street food from all across Asia. Most meals are between IDR25-50k (AUD$2.50-$5), and with live music most nights and a great atmosphere, it’s a cheap and cheerful night out. There is an option of both undercover and alfresco seating.

Grab A Bite With Rock And Roll Legends At The Hard Rock Cafe
