A big round of applause for the beautiful effort by 12 students from the 6th Grade to 10th Grade of Bali Island School for their ‘Mini Lending Library’ community initiative.

A very well-deserved appreciation for these brilliant students who have built the “People’s Perpustakan”, a mini lending library dedicated to the local community residents in Sanur, in commemoration of National Education Day of Indonesia that falls every May 2nd.
The students spent two weeks designing and building the project, and got a helping hand from local carpenters. Throughout the process the students learned basic woodworking, design, communication, painting and marketing skills. More than technical skills, they were also challenged to hone their leadership skills by organizing a book donation and procurement program along with PERIPLUS bookstore and the wider BIS community.
The library provides new books both in Bahasa Indonesia and English to suit all ages, with both non-fiction and fiction genres which all include directions of how the library works. The Community are encouraged to borrow any book they like, bring it home, read and return it once they finish.
The library is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it is located on Jalan Danau Buyan IV in Sanur.
The officiation day which was held on the April 28th, 2022, was attended by the local Banjar (Bali’s smallest form of local government), the local school and children from Sanur’s neighborhood.
From the speech delivered by the students on the day, we all can see that these future generations are preparing themselves by gaining new skills while at the same time giving others a chance to access the wider knowledge, nurturing reading habits and being involved in the improvement of literacy level in Indonesia.
Such a brilliant initiative from children to other children.
