On the 18th April 2024, Bali Island School (BIS) and Livingseas Asia joined forces to instil a sense of environmental stewardship in young hearts and minds, through an immersive coral workshop held at Padang Bai Beach.

As champions of global citizenship and environmental consciousness, Bali Island School collaborated with Livingseas Asia to organise a coral restoration workshop, reinforcing the importance of marine conservation and ecosystem preservation.

The workshop began with an engaging presentation by Livingseas Asia, where students participated in a lively discussion centred around coral reefs and the critical role they play in sustaining our planet’s biodiversity. Following this enlightening session, the students embarked on a journey aboard a Pontoon Boat that had been specially arranged for the workshop’s hands-on activities.

Students also had the opportunity to witness living coral from the genus Acropora up close, as well as actively participate in coral restoration efforts. By planting coral fragments on racks strategically placed in protected areas, students not only contributed to the rejuvenation of Bali’s coral reefs, but also symbolically named their reef stars, signifying their commitment to marine conservation and safeguarding of the environment.

The workshop concluded in a leisurely snorkelling excursion, allowing students to further explore the vibrant ecosystems of coral reefs, whilst solidifying their understanding of the importance of ocean preservation.

“This learning experience was an amazing opportunity to combine active learning while collaborating with a local NGO to help restore Bali’s coral reefs. We hope to make a long-term partnership with Livingseas as part of the ‘Service as Action Program’ and the Bali Island School Co-curricular Learning experiences,” said My Jay Kumpel, the Learning Support Teacher at Bali Island School.

In addition to fulfilling BIS’ commitment to environmental sustainability, the coral workshop also served as a fitting celebration of Earth Day, showcasing the school’s dedication to nurturing a generation of globally conscious citizens who are equipped with the knowledge and passion to safeguard our planet’s precious natural resources. Great job BIS!
