Bali’s neighbouring island of Lombok offers great surf, beautiful white-sand beaches, and a peaceful ambience.

Close by, the traffic-free Gili Islands ooze tropical island appeal. Think aquamarine ocean, snorkeling straight from the shore, and lively beach bonfires by night.

Getting to both destinations is relatively easy, with daily speedboats from Bali’s eastern ports making the journey in around two hours.

Just be sure to do your research before you book as each island has its own flavour and feel. But whether you want to catch waves, trek up a volcano, or get your party on, there’s something for you.

Where to Stay in Lombok & the Gili Islands , Bali

Most visitors to Lombok stay in Senggigi or Kuta, the island’s main seaside resorts. Accommodation options vary from simple surf camps to five-star resorts, with more reasonable pricing than you’d find in Bali.

Likewise, Gili Trawangan (Gili T), the largest and busiest of the three Gili islands, has accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.

Spacious pool villas, luxe resorts, and backpacker-friendly bungalows are all possibilities here. The quieter Gili Islands (Gili Air and Gili Meno) are perfect for a romantic getaway, with secluded beach bungalows and chilled-out resorts.

Things to Do in Lombok & the Gili Islands

If you’re a beach lover or ocean baby, you’ll love all of these islands.

A Gili snorkelling experience is a must. Both shore snorkeling and boat tours to multiple sites are possible here. Glide through the warm clear waters above colourful coral gardens, and keep your eyes peeled for turtles, butterfly fish, parrot fish, and reef sharks!

Gili T is also known for its buzzing nightlife. The shore comes alive after sunset with beach parties and bonfires. It’s a great place to let loose and meet like-minded travellers!

If it’s surf you’re looking for, Lombok’s your place. The southern coast is blessed with numerous surf spots, mostly suited to beginners and intermediates. It’s also home to the notorious Desert Point site, one of the best left-hand barrels on the planet.

Also in Lombok is Indonesia’s second highest volcano, Mount Rinjani. The scenery is spectacular but scaling it is a challenge, even for the fittest adventurers. Allow between two and four days to make the climb. Tour packages include meals and an English-speaking guide, with porters to carry your tents and cooking equipment.
