Elevated Elegance – A Serene Getaway at Munduk Mountain Estate

When you think of Bali, the images that you conjure-up are most likely of white sandy beaches, rolling surf breaks and bustling nightlife. Not many people know that tucked-away in the island’s mainland lies Munduk, a hidden wonderland of misty mountains and emerald green landscapes, offering a tranquil retreat from the coastal crowds.

Nestled amongst the mystical allure of Munduk, you’ll find Munduk Mountain Estate – a private sanctuary for those keen to reconnect with nature, complete with all the modern comforts you need for an ultimate chilled-out getaway. After tackling the recent hot and sweaty weather in southern Bali, we couldn’t wait for an excuse to escape to this hidden slice of paradise!

Having only recently opened its doors to guests in 2023, we were excited to spend two relaxing nights in this epic villa and enjoy a slower pace of life up in the hills. After a two-hour drive from Sanur, we were greeted by friendly, welcoming staff who relieved us of all our luggage and were keen to show us around the property. As we made our way through the entrance, we were struck by, not just the size of Munduk Mountain Estate, but also the impressive interior. With the high ceilings, gorgeous furnishings and attention to detail, we knew straight away that we were in for a luxurious stay.

But without a doubt, it’s the jaw-dropping panoramic views from the lounge area and generous deck that are what sets this retreat apart from the rest. Surrounded by 6,000m² of unspoilt rolling mountainside, Munduk Mountain Estate offers sweeping views of ancient forests and lush green jungles. Taking-in big breaths of the fresh mountain air, we could practically feel our bodies unwind, as we stood there watching the mist slowly rising over the valley.

This luxe villa is perfect for large family gatherings, or like us, a getaway with friends! With 4 spacious bedrooms, each perfectly designed to take full advantage of those breathtaking vistas, there is plenty of room for groups, without the feeling of people getting under your feet. We loved the contemporary rustic vibes mixed with elegant Balinese touches, such as the stunning traditional wood carvings and oil paintings that hung throughout the property.

There are two master suites which have ample space for additional beds if needed, as well as deluxe ensuite facilities. The third bedroom proudly displays some of the most impressive bunk-beds we have ever seen – featuring x4 adult-sized bunks (small doubles) and two additional beds. The fourth bedroom offers total seclusion and privacy, located a few steps downhill from the main house and complete with a double bed, ensuite bathroom and beautiful backdrops.

As the mist rolled-in for the evening, the in-house chef cooked-up a feast of tasty locally-sourced, healthy comfort food to keep our bellies full and warm, from authentic Balinese curries to tender Beef Stroganoff. They can also cater for those with specific dietary requirements if required, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free. The stylish open-plan kitchen is kitted-out with all the mod-cons you could desire during your stay, such as a family-style oven, double fridge and freezer, drinking water filter and plenty of glasses and crockery.  After dinner, we snuggled down in the comfy open-living space, whilst the villa staff lit a roaring fire – ideal for the crisp and drizzly mountain air! What better accompaniment than a full-bodied bottle of red to sip on from their international wine list, whilst we were entertained by staff on the acoustic guitar – they even do requests! It was the perfect way to end our first night!

After a very comfy night’s sleep, we awoke to birdsong and pink fairy-floss sunrise skies. Breakfast was served out on the veranda, complete with a side of magnificently clear valley views. Don’t let its quiet facade fool you – Munduk and the surrounding area is full of fun day trips and activities, such as visiting the famous Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, Bali Farm House, hot springs, strawberry picking at the many local farms, Rumah Gemuk glasshouse and a whole host of jaw-dropping waterfalls. If you are keen to explore some of these Munduk gems, simply let the Munduk Mountain Estate staff know, and they can help to organise it all for you. There’s even a local coffee plantation and veggie garden nearby! However, we found it hard to pull ourselves away from the cosy little nooks dotted all around the estate, and instead opted to make the most of the impressive infinity pool and hot tub.

For a swimming pool with a view, we don’t think it gets much better than this – it was as though we were floating around up in the clouds! Once we’d had enough of doing laps, we rewarded ourselves with a soothing soak in their hot plunge pool, complete with a glass of bubbles as we drank-in those beautiful uninterrupted Bali panoramas.

As the sun slowly set behind the hills, the staff jumped into action, rustling-up a crackling fire-pit as we toasted marshmallows and listened to the chattering of the jungle around us. Afterwards, we robed-up in our complimentary fluffy dressing-gowns and headed-off to the media room to kick-back and relax on their giant 4m x 2m sofas. Not only is this spot ideal for a laid-back evening with family and friends, it can also be converted into an extra bedroom, meaning that the entire villa can sleep up to 14 people if needed. After a few games of cards accompanied by mugs of hot chocolate and face masks, bed was soon calling us. We all couldn’t wait to jump into our comfy beds and snuggle-down under the warm blankets.

We reluctantly awoke, knowing that this was to be our final day at Munduk Mountain Estate. The sun was shining and we decided it was the perfect opportunity to grab some last-minute pool time, chilling with a good book on the deluxe loungers as we soaked-up some Bali sunshine – we were certainly going to miss this place!

A special shout-out to the wonderful staff who kept the villa so clean during our stay and were on hand to tend to our every need – from lighting fires to cooking delicious meals, entertaining us with their musical skills and everything in between – nothing was too much trouble.

Our time at Munduk Mountain Estate definitely exceeded our expectations – full of stunning panoramas, cosy evenings and unforgettable memories! Munduk’s misty mountains and tranquil surroundings has certainly woven a place into our hearts. One thing’s for certain, we’ll be counting down the days until our return to this slice of highland heaven!
